Head of Animal Facility and attending Veterinarian (100%)

The Central Animal Facility is the largest facility of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC), University of Bern (Switzerland). Its main function is to breed and house small rodents and rabbits and to provide the infrastructure for conducting animal experiments as part of the biomedical research program of the University of Bern. The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the "Culture of Care" and compliance with guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy. 

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Head of Animal Facility starting immediately or by agreement.

Responsibilities

• Direct the operation of the Central Animal Facility (processes, finances and personnel)
• Provide veterinary clinical, surgical and medical care to the animal population
• Supervise the hygiene and monitoring program
• Manage the animal stock with the database system
• Plan and participate to the emergency, weekend, and holiday care
• Write, update and implement SOPs
• Advice the researchers regarding genetically modified mouse breeding and research procedures
• Ensure the compliance with the regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, University's directives and process specifications
• Participate to building renovation projects
• Support the ECLAM residency program and internal education for scientists and staff

Your profile

• You have a doctorate in veterinary medicine and a specialisation in laboratory animal medicine (ECLAM/ACLAM diploma or board eligibility).
• You have practical experience in breeding of genetically modified models. Experience with fish or zebrafish is a plus.
• You bring proven management experience and leadership in complex structures.
• You are team- and goal-oriented and have excellent communication skills.
• You speak English. German would be an advantage.

Quality Assurance Manager (40-60%)

The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the "Culture of Care" and compliance with guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Quality Assurance Manager to join our team and ensure the continued success of our research programs.

Job Description

The Quality Assurance Manager will be responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of quality standards within the EAC. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in quality assurance, and great communication skills. Experience with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles is an added advantage.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance programs and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Conduct regular audits and inspections of study activities to verify adherence to quality standards and identify areas for improvement.
• Provide training and guidance to staff on quality assurance practices.
• Collaborate with study directors, principal investigators, and facility managers to ensure that all research activities meet quality and regulatory requirements.
• Manage and maintain documentation and records related to quality assurance activities, including audit reports, training records, and SOPs.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory authorities and external auditors.
• Stay updated with changes in regulatory requirements and industry best practices and implement necessary updates to the quality assurance program.
• Foster a culture of quality, and continuous improvement within the EAC.

Your profile

• Bachelor's degree in a scientific or related field; a degree in Quality management, a Master's degree or higher is an advantage.
• Proven experience in quality assurance.
• Experience with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles is an advantage.
• Proven management experience in complex structures.
• Goal-oriented and have excellent communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and priorities.
• Proficiency in English, German would be an advantage.

Ihre Aufgaben

• Leitung des Betriebs der Zentralen Tierhaltungsanlage (Verfahren, Finanzen und Personal)
• Tierärztliche klinische, chirurgische und medizinische Versorgung der Tierpopulation
• Beaufsichtigung des Hygiene- und Überwachungsprogramms
• Verwalten des Tierbestands mit dem Datenbanksystem
• Planung und Teilnahme an der Notfall-, Wochenend- und Feiertagsbetreuung
• Erstellung, Aktualisierung und Umsetzung von SOPs
• Beratung der Forscher in Bezug auf die Zucht genetisch veränderter Mäuse und die Forschungsverfahren
• Sicherstellung der Einhaltung der Vorschriften des Tierschutzgesetzes, der Richtlinien der Universität und der Verfahrensvorschriften
• Beteiligung an Gebäuderenovierungsprojekten
• Unterstützung des ECLAM-Residency-Programms und der internen Ausbildung von Wissenschaftlern und Mitarbeitern

Ihr Profil

• Sie verfügen über einen Doktortitel in Veterinärmedizin und eine Spezialisierung in Labortiermedizin (ECLAM/ACLAM-Diplom oder Prüfungszulassung).
• Sie verfügen über praktische Erfahrung in der Züchtung von genetisch veränderten Modellen. Erfahrung mit Fischen oder Zebrafischen ist von Vorteil.
• Sie bringen nachweislich Managementerfahrung und Führungsqualitäten in komplexen Strukturen mit.
• Sie sind team- und zielorientiert und verfügen über ausgezeichnete Kommunikationsfähigkeiten.

Stellenbeschreibung

Der Qualitätsmanager ist für die Überwachung der Umsetzung und Aufrechterhaltung von Qualitätsstandards innerhalb des EAC zuständig. Der ideale Kandidat verfügt über einen fundierten Hintergrund in der Qualitätssicherung und über ausgezeichnete Kommunikationsfähigkeiten. Erfahrungen mit den Grundsätzen der «Good Laboratory Practice» (GLP) sind ein zusätzlicher Vorteil.

Ihre Aufgaben

• Entwickeln, implementieren und pflegen der Qualitätssicherungsprogramme und Standardarbeitsanweisungen (SOPs), um die Einhaltung der gesetzlichen Vorschriften zu gewährleisten.
• Durchführung regelmäßiger Überprüfungen und Inspektionen der Prüftätigkeiten, um die Einhaltung der Qualitätsstandards zu überprüfen und verbesserungswürdige Bereiche zu ermitteln.
• Schulung und Anleitung des Personals in Bezug auf Qualitätssicherungspraktiken.
• Zusammenarbeit mit Studienleitern, Hauptprüfern und Einrichtungsleitern, um sicherzustellen, dass alle Forschungsaktivitäten den Qualitäts- und Regulierungsanforderungen entsprechen.
• Verwaltung und Pflege von Unterlagen und Aufzeichnungen im Zusammenhang mit Qualitätssicherungsaktivitäten, einschließlich Auditberichten, Schulungsunterlagen und SOPs.
• Funktion als Hauptansprechpartner für Regulierungsbehörden und externe Prüfer.
• Sie halten sich auf dem Laufenden über Änderungen der gesetzlichen Vorschriften und bewährten Verfahren der Branche und führen die erforderlichen Aktualisierungen des Qualitätssicherungsprogramms durch.
• Förderung einer Kultur der Qualität und der kontinuierlichen Verbesserung innerhalb des Zentrums.

Ihr Profil

• Bachelor-Abschluss in einem wissenschaftlichen oder verwandten Bereich; ein Abschluss im Bereich Qualitätsmanagement, ein Master-Abschluss oder höher ist von Vorteil.
• Nachgewiesene Erfahrung in der Qualitätssicherung.
• Erfahrungen mit den Grundsätzen der «Good Laboratory Practise» (GLP) sind von Vorteil.
• Nachgewiesene Managementerfahrung in komplexen Strukturen.
• Sie sind zielorientiert und verfügen über ausgezeichnete Kommunikationsfähigkeiten.

Internship in Laboratory Animals with focus on anaesthesia and analgesia (12 months)

The Experimental Animal Center of the University of Bern, Switzerland, is opening a 12-month post-graduation specialised internship in Laboratory Animals (with focus in anesthesia and analgesia), starting in June 2025 or by agreement.

The EAC is responsible for all in-vivo research of the University of Bern and cares for the animals and the infrastructure for conducting animal experiments. The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the "Culture of Care" and compliance with guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy.

The internship will be divided in two blocks. During the first 6 months-block, the successful candidate will provide anaesthesia and peri-operative care to the experimental animals under the direct supervision and teaching of at least 1 ECVAA Diplomate, in the Experimental Surgery Facility. During the second 6 months-block the successful candidate will deal with all different aspects of laboratory medicine under the supervision of ECLAM residents, ECLAM and ECZM diplomates and will rotate in the other Facilities of the Experimental Animal Center.

Requirements

For this position it is required to hold a master’s degree in veterinary medicine recognised in Europe. 

A genuine interest and motivation in the research setting, the ability of working in a multi-professional and multi-lingual team and the willingness of contributing to the advancement of medical and veterinary research are essential features to be an eligible candidate. The candidate should also have enthusiasm for laboratory medicine, comply with the culture of care, be a team player and have good communication skills.

The ability to communicate fluently in English is expected from the commencement of the employment, and the willingness to learn basic German is required.

Previous experience in anaesthesia and/or in an ICU setting are of advantage.
