Facilities

Experimental Animal Center

The EAC is an interfaculty unit of the University of Bern and the umbrella structure responsible for all the in-vivo research, aiming to promote high research quality thanks to a structured and coordinated management of the animal facilities, the harmonization of processes, and the optimization of resources.

The culture of care and compliance with regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy. The EAC, in collaboration with the Animal Welfare Office, promotes animal welfare, the 3Rs and exchange of specialist knowledge internally, throughout Switzerland and internationally.

The EAC is managed by the Steering Board (SB), where all three Faculties (Vetsuisse, Medicine and Biology) are represented and the Executive Director.

They are supported by the EAC Committee for technical questions. Further core functions are the Building, Pyrat, GMO, Finance and Infrastructure managers and the administration.

CAF - Central Animal Facilities

The CAF is a service of the EAC and focuses on the housing and breeding of rodents and rabbits for biomedical research, as well as the provision of laboratory facilities for researchers to carry out animal experiments.

The location of the premises within the Insel area, allows scientists to perform the experiments efficiently.

Based on its personnel, spatial and financial possibilities, the CAF always endeavors to support and meet the needs of researchers. The user agreement and internal regulations support the operational processes in the animal facilities.

Feel free to contact us at caf.eac@unibe.ch for any need.

CMF - Clean Mouse Facility

The team of the CMF is highly qualified and has several years of experience in performing experiments under axenic and gnotobiotic conditions.

The scientific team of the CMF is also certified and motivated to find solutions for new types of experiments or set-ups.

Do not hesitate to contact the head of the facility (cmf.eac@unibe.ch) as early as possible during the project design in order to benefit of our expertise.

The CMF team insures that experiments and projects are planned properly.

ESF - Experimental Surgery Facility

The Experimental Surgery Facility (ESF) is dedicated to enable researchers to perform short and long-terms experimental trials, in which surgery, imaging and general anaesthesia and analgesia are required. Our expertise covers many species, among which pigs, goats, sheep, calves, rabbits and rats are the most represented.

Our team aims at high quality standard of work in the respect of the animal welfare and the 3Rs and our specific research interest is in the area of perioperative animal analgesia. We believe that the improvement of animal well-being is an ethic must towards the animals in research and can improve sensibly the value of scientific readouts.

Mu28 Breeding facility

The breeding facility houses the genetically modified mice colonies of the University of Bern in SOPF status. Additionally, to the breeding and colony management, the Mu28 provides cryobiology services.
